UberMusic UberMusic

UberMusic is a music player. Yes, yes, Android has a music player built in. And it works. But it’s not much to look at, is it?

Well, UberMusic is!

Originally based on the Metro/Zune Player UI, UberMusic brings a bit of the one thing that Microsoft seem to be getting right (if nothing else) lately; stylish interfaces. Straight out of the gate, with no skins, UberMusic looks like it’s been plucked from a Windows Phone 7 device and shoved into Android. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but, if you don’t find the  UI as attractive as I do, there’s a big feature that I alluded a few lines ago; skins.

UberMusic’s appearance is fully customisable using skins that can be downloaded from the app store. The method for making skins is easily available, and so there are lots of skins from lots of developers available for your eager fingers to download. Some of the skins are paid, but there a lot of free ones to choose from, also.

Keeping in theme with the appearance, UberMusic, if allowed, will download artwork (not necessarily just album art) to do with the artist being played, and display it behind the control screen, just in case you’d forgotten who you were listening to. Perhaps more useful, however, is the “Bio” tab, which lets you click on an artist to see their biography.

UberMusic boasts a “true” shuffling system that will not repeat a song until the entire playlist has been listening to. It also supports Scrobbling, if you’re into that kind of thing.

The app has a full range of widgets to choose from, six sizes in all, to make it that little bit easier to fit UberMusic into your life. There is even a live wallpaper that creates a mosaic of your album art and then proceeds to flick through all the albums, which can be a little hypnotic.

There a few little UI tweaks, such as being able to click the play button beside an artists name to just play all of that artists songs, rather than going into the artist’s songlist.

UberMusic isn’t free, but you’ll be paying for style with this one.
