You may be wondering why a third party video player is needed on Android; the built in player works fine, it does what it needs to, it plays video files. Why, then, would you bother downloading MX Player.

Here’s why.

You may not come across the problem of file formats, if you only ever play YouTube or Netflix videos on your Android device, but if you stray from the safety of things like the Google play store, you might just have found that there a few relatively common file formats that the stock Android video player won’t touch. MX Player does not have this problem. The developer claims that the app “plays almost every movie file” and it’s certainly helped me out when I’ve wanted to view certain formats, such as divx and .mov.

What of those you who are fine with the supported file formats of Android? How about a much improved user interface? There are swipe commands to be used on the screen when watching a video, such as swiping up or down on one side of the screen to change the brightness, and on the other side to change the volume. Or, swiping left or right, to rewind or fast forward.

Another nice little touch, while not particularly ground breaking but extremely useful, is that MX Player will remember the place you left off with your videos. Loading up a video you’ve previously left half-watched will present you with a dialogue asking if you want to continue from where you left off, or start again.

Other nice little additions to the feature list include pinch to zoom, subtitles, child lock, support for multi-core devices, and hardware acceleration.

If you’re running an Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or higher device, and more and more Android users are, you will benefit from the optimisation that MX Player has to make it run as smoothly as possible on the more recent iterations of the Android OS.

MX Player has a free, ad-supported version, or you can get the “Pro” version if those ads really bug you. Either way, if you watch a lot of video files on your Android device, you want MX Player. Install it from Google play store.

The above comments from Google Play directly shows that MX Player works well. I have a feeling mobile users wont stop using this music app at any single minute. It’s rating is also good. Hitting a Four.7/5 star is a serious business.
