Smartphone-based fare payments in London |

NFC is just about to launch app that will see commuters in London pay for their fare while traveling locally. This is according to a report in the Financial Times, that talks between carriers EE and Vodafone have begun with Transport for London over extending their mobile wallet solutions for travelers.

The initial trial is expected to be a “pay as you go” scheme using apps owned by the mobile operators that can be preloaded with money. Operators could also consider payment for tickets on a weekly or monthly basis, according to a person familiar with the plans.

The barriers at London Underground stations will work with smartphones for NFC payments after activation that facility. Shashi Verma, TfL’s director of customer experience said; ”The upgrade we have made to our readers to accept contactless payment cards also makes them capable of accepting suitable payment applications on mobile phones,”

A person familiar with the plans also told the FT that operators could eventually allow customers to buy weekly or monthly travel cards.

“We are doing some testing to see how the devices perform on the system and welcome any new payment technologies that meet the relevant industry standards and enable sufficiently fast transactions speeds.”

Google Camera |

Google CameraGoogle Camera snaps quick and easy photos and videos, and has creative picture modes like Photo Sphere, Lens Blur and Panorama.

The new camera app has added more features and functionalities over the previous version. The best of all is the new blur effect that lets you had a SLR-ish shallow depth of field effect, focusing on a target and blurring the background. Not only that, it lets you refocus an image after it’s been taken.

On the other hand, some functions like the countdown, time lapse, and white balance settings are still missing; that something that can be looked into later. But nothing to worry about for the most essential features were made available. Unfortunately, the app is installable only on Android device running Android 4.4. That’s quite something to get excited about but in some way its sad news to users who have not upgraded their device to this current version of Android.

All in all, Google Camera app is here, can be downloaded via the Google play store and it’s free. Here are a couple of its features

  • Photo Spheres for immersive 360º views
  • Lens Blur mode for SLR-like photos with shallow depth of field
  • Panorama mode with high resolution
  • 100% viewfinder for getting the maximum resolution from the sensor (no dropped pixels)
  • Updated UI that gets out of your way and is centered on an extra-large capture button
  • Works on phones and tablets running Android 4.4+ KitKat

PayPal on the Galaxy S5 with FingerPrint support, Apps for Gear 2 & Gear Fit |

Back at MWC 2014 Samsung announced that Galaxy S5’s Fingerprint scanner will not only be used to unlock the device but also will be used online for security purposes and authentication while making payments. Last Friday PayPal announced the availability of their fingerprint-based authentication system in 25 countries. It is the same day that S5 was launching globally, as planned by the Korean based company.

Users will simply swipe down on the home button on their S5 smartphone to authenticate PayPal payments on the mobile web, apps and in retail stores without needing to log in to their PayPal account every time. In other words, owners of S5 will have to forget about usernames & passwords if at all what they need is just to swipe a finger. Also, mobile phones are becoming more personalised as in such cases where fingerprint is required it may be hard to use someone’s phone to access such features. However, the old login option is still valid, so do not through as away your login details (Username & Password). Samsung’s S5 is the first Smartphone to incorporate the FIDO authentication standard that was developed by Google, Microsoft, MasterCard, and Lenovo; hopeful there rest will adobe this tech soon or latter.

John Lunn PayPal Developer Network:

Customers can use their finger to pay with PayPal from their new Samsung Galaxy S5 because the FIDO Ready software on the device securely communicates between the fingerprint sensor on their device and PayPal’s service in the cloud. The only information the device shares with PayPal is a unique encrypted key that allows PayPal to verify the identity of the customer without having to store any biometric information on PayPal’s servers”

PayPal has also created PayPal apps for the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit. The apps will be made available on Samsung’s Apps store. With the app users will be able to make payments from their smart watch (also known as fitness tracker), and access PayPal services like checking balance, and will also be receiving notifications when funds arrive to their accounts.
